Your Kua Number: Why the Same Home Can Feel Different to Different People
By Joanna · Studio 10 Feng Shui

Your personal Feng Shui directions — and why your Kua Number is only the beginning.
Have you ever shared a room with someone who felt perfectly at ease there, while you kept searching for a different place to sit, work or rest?
Light, sound, comfort and daily habits all shape that experience. In classical Feng Shui, there is also a personal layer: your Kua Number. It offers a way to explore your relationship with direction, rather than assuming that one arrangement suits everyone.
If you discovered your Kua Number through our Reel, this is the next step: understanding what that number means, how to use it thoughtfully and where its limits begin.

How this calculation works
We use the solar-year convention for Eight Mansions, with the new year beginning at Li Chun in early February. January and 1 February use the preceding year; dates from 7 February use the current year. For 2–6 February, we show both possible charts because the exact transition, birth time and birthplace need checking.
The male formula reduces 11 minus the digit sum of the full solar birth year. The female formula reduces 4 plus that sum. A result of 5 is read as 2 for the male calculation and 8 for the female calculation. These equivalent full-year formulas also cover births from 2000 onwards.
This is a personal direction chart with north at the top, not a live compass or a complete assessment of your home. Traditional associations are guidance, not guarantees.

What is a Kua Number?
Your Kua Number, also called your Life Gua or Ming Gua, is used in Eight Mansions Feng Shui. It is traditionally calculated from your birth year and the male or female calculation used by that method. It connects you with one of eight guas and a set of personal directional associations.
Think of it as a starting point for asking better questions about your space. Which way do you face when you work? In which compass direction does the top of your head point when you sleep? Could a comfortable alternative arrangement support the activity you want to prioritise?
East Group or West Group?
The eight personal guas are divided into two groups. Each group shares four traditionally favourable compass directions, although the particular quality assigned to each direction changes with the individual gua.
East Group
1 · 3 · 4 · 9
North · South · East · Southeast
Four shared favourable directions, with a different order of qualities for each Kua.
West Group
2 · 6 · 7 · 8
West · Northwest · Southwest · Northeast
Four shared favourable directions, with a different order of qualities for each Kua.
These groups describe directions, not a list of rooms you should automatically use or avoid. Facing east at a desk is different from placing that desk in the eastern sector of your home. Direction and location are separate measurements.
Four directions, four different qualities
Within Eight Mansions, the four favourable directions have distinct traditional associations. This is why the direction chosen for focused work may differ from the one considered for rest.
| Traditional quality | What it is associated with |
|---|---|
| Sheng Qi | Vitality, growth and progress. |
| Tian Yi | Health and restorative support. |
| Yan Nian | Relationships, harmony and lasting connection. |
| Fu Wei | Stability, calm and personal development. |
These are traditional interpretive qualities, rather than promises of a particular outcome. The group chart above cannot tell you which direction represents each quality for your own Kua; that requires your individual direction chart.
Your bed and your desk use direction differently
One of the easiest misunderstandings is to apply the same instruction to every piece of furniture. For a desk, the personal facing direction is the direction you look towards while seated. For a bed, the convention used here is the direction in which the top of your head points while lying down.
Bed: head direction
Desk: facing direction
Before moving anything, check the room itself. A supportive wall, a clear route through the space, comfortable light and a practical layout matter. Turning a desk towards a favourable direction while leaving yourself cramped or exposed is not a thoughtful solution.
What if you and your partner belong to different groups?
Different Kua groups do not mean you are incompatible, or that a shared bedroom cannot work. They mean there are different personal directional preferences to consider within the same room.
Start with a secure, comfortable bed position and the qualities of the bedroom. Then consider both people’s needs and the wider assessment of the home. Personal direction can also be explored separately at a desk or in a place used for reading, rather than asking one shared bed to solve every priority.
The useful question is not “Which person gets the right direction?” It is “How can this room support the people who actually live here?”
Your personal Kua is not your House Gua
Your Life Gua concerns you. The House Gua concerns the building and is derived from its orientation within the Eight Mansions method. They are related parts of an assessment, but they are not interchangeable.
A personal direction chart cannot tell you everything about your bedroom, entrance or home. The surrounding landscape, the building’s form, the floor plan and other classical Feng Shui methods can all change how a recommendation is applied.
Check the calculation before rearranging your room
If you were born in January or early February, take extra care with an online calculator. Classical calculations commonly use the solar-year boundary at Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring, rather than 1 January or the Lunar New Year. The exact transition varies by year.
Use a calculator that explains its year boundary and calculation convention. If your date is close to the transition, have it checked before making decisions. Some calculators also display an initial result of 5 and then convert it to the appropriate gua under their chosen method, so a bare number without an explanation can be misleading.
A thoughtful place to begin
Verify your Kua, identify your group and observe the directions you already use. Choose one practical adjustment that keeps the room comfortable, and notice how the arrangement works in daily life.
You do not need to rotate your entire home around a number. The aim is to bring the personal layer into a wider understanding of your space, so that changes feel considered, useful and appropriate to you.
